In the past decade the Wesleyan Church of Mozambique has grown rapidly, both by strategic church planting efforts as well as by the spontaneous spread of the gospel. In 2005 the church targeted the northerly province of Nampula, sending two Mozambican missionary couples along with Jim & Karen Pickett from Global Partners. The plan was eventually to reach into Niasa Province along the northern border with Tanzania. However, before church planting effort for Niasa was launched, converts from Nampula had already migrated northwards and started several churches in the province. In late 2010 or early 2011, that spontaneous church expansion continued across the border into Tanzania where two churches were planted. This fledgling work is under the jurisdiction of the Mozambican church.
